The Igbo Studies Association (ISA) based in the United States of America has elected its new Executive Officers for the 2011-13 tenure, effective immediately. Prof. Apollos O. Nwauwa of Bowling Green State University, Ohio was elected President; Prof Akachi T. Ezeigbo of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, was elected Vice President; Mr Austine Duru of Sisters of St Francis Health Services, Chicago, was elected Secretary; Dr Ada U. Azodo of Indiana University Northwest was elected Treasurer; while Dr Kanayo Odeluga of Chicago Heights Medical Center was elected Public Relations Officer. The election occurred at the 9th Annual ISA International Conference, April 8-9, 2011 at Howard University, Washington, DC. The election was presided by Prof. Douglas Chambers of the University of Southern Mississippi and who is also a member of the Association’s Board of Directors. The elected officers were sworn in by Prof Akuma Kalu Njoku of Western Kentucky University, also a member of the Board of Directors, at the Nigerian Embassy Banquet Hall during an evening event organized by the Nwannedinamba Association. The nomination/voting process was remarkably professional and peaceful.
In his brief acceptance remarks, the new ISA President, Prof Nwauwa promised a transformative leadership with transparency and accountability through collaboration and consultation with his new team and the ISA general membership. He also thanked the immediate past ISA officers for their selfless services to ISA.
The Igbo Studies Association was founded in 1999, to promote and encourage scholarship on Igbo history, culture and society, both at home and abroad. It is based in the US, with members drawn largely from the academic community and select professions who are committed to engendering and promoting scholarship in all aspects of Igbo studies.
